Does it take you a long time to recall things? Have you ever gone into a room to get something only to forget what it was you wanted by the time you got there? You're not alone, a lot of students are in the same boat.
Let’s look at 3 ways to help you learn and remember vocabulary.
1. Mnemonics
A mnemonic, is any technique that helps you remember information by connecting it to something meaningful or familiar. A mnemonic device is a phrase, rhyme, or picture that can be used as a memory tool. These devices can be used by students from all walks of life and of all ages. You’re far more likely to remember a word or concept if you can connect it with a piece of information you already know.
2. Language in Context
Context derives from the Latin “CONTEXTUS” which means weaving or putting together. I bet you, you thought the “text” part of “context” referred to text. I did. Context provides the real-life situations in which language is used. Learn phrases or words related to specific settings you’ll find yourself in like visiting a restaurant, doctor, dentist, park or just chatting with friends in a coffee shop.
3. Recycling
Recycling? What does this have to do with memorising new words? The prefix “re” means again, and when you recycle something, you process it for another cycle of use. Language must be recycled. Learners have to see or hear words between 6 - 17 times in order to remember new vocabulary and to start using them confidently. How are you keeping track of new words or new information?
Please, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT’S GOOD IN THIS WORLD avoid memorising a long list of words!
Here are some of my suggestions:
Keep a special vocabulary book, include mind maps, pictures and so on.
Make use of categorising or an IDEA BANK which is very useful for learners studying IELTS, TOEFL or PTE. I recommend keeping an IDEA BANK.
Don’t forget about keeping things interesting and fun! Movies, Apps, TV Shows, Articles, Podcasts, Music, Speeches, Audio books and so much more.
Lastly, make a lot of mistakes. What do I mean by that? Well in order to remember something you have to go from studying to using it.
